The Complete Kilimanjaro Packing List
Packing for Kilimanjaro means preparing for five climate zones in one trip — from steamy rainforest to an arctic summit. Layering is everything. Here's your essential checklist.
Layers & clothing
- Moisture-wicking base layers (top & bottom)
- Insulating mid-layers — fleece or light down
- Insulated down jacket for summit night
- Waterproof, breathable jacket and trousers
- Trekking trousers and shorts
- Warm hat, sun hat, buff/balaclava and liner + insulated gloves
Footwear
- Broken-in waterproof hiking boots
- Several pairs of wool hiking socks
- Camp shoes or trainers for the evenings
- Gaiters for muddy and scree sections
Equipment
- Sleeping bag rated to at least -12°C (warmer is better)
- Headlamp with spare batteries
- Trekking poles
- 30–35 L daypack and a rain cover
- Water bottles and/or a hydration bladder (3 L capacity)
- Sunglasses (category 3–4), high-SPF sunscreen and lip balm
Travelling light? Most of the bulky items — sleeping bags, down jackets, poles and more — can be rented in Moshi, clean and checked, so you don't have to fly with a full kit.
