The Complete Kilimanjaro Packing List

28 April 2026 9 min read Kilimanjaro Climbing Agency

Packing for Kilimanjaro means preparing for five climate zones in one trip — from steamy rainforest to an arctic summit. Layering is everything. Here's your essential checklist.

Layers & clothing

  • Moisture-wicking base layers (top & bottom)
  • Insulating mid-layers — fleece or light down
  • Insulated down jacket for summit night
  • Waterproof, breathable jacket and trousers
  • Trekking trousers and shorts
  • Warm hat, sun hat, buff/balaclava and liner + insulated gloves

Footwear

  • Broken-in waterproof hiking boots
  • Several pairs of wool hiking socks
  • Camp shoes or trainers for the evenings
  • Gaiters for muddy and scree sections

Equipment

  • Sleeping bag rated to at least -12°C (warmer is better)
  • Headlamp with spare batteries
  • Trekking poles
  • 30–35 L daypack and a rain cover
  • Water bottles and/or a hydration bladder (3 L capacity)
  • Sunglasses (category 3–4), high-SPF sunscreen and lip balm

Travelling light? Most of the bulky items — sleeping bags, down jackets, poles and more — can be rented in Moshi, clean and checked, so you don't have to fly with a full kit.
