Rongai Route — the quiet northern approach

The Rongai route is the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, close to the Kenyan border. Though gaining popularity, it retains low traffic and a sense of unspoilt wilderness — the preferred choice for those wanting an alternative to the crowded Marangu route, a more remote hike, or a climb during the rainy season, since the north side receives less precipitation.

The minimum is six days, with seven recommended. Although the scenery is not as varied as the western routes, Rongai makes up for it by passing through true wilderness for days before joining the Marangu route at Kibo camp, then descending the Marangu route.

Rongai is a moderately difficult route and is highly recommended, especially for those with less backpacking experience. To aid acclimatisation on the longer versions we add an extra day at Mawenzi Tarn.

6 Day Rongai Route Itinerary

Day1

Rongai Gate to Rongai First Cave

6,400 ft → 8,600 ft6.5 km3–4 hrsRain Forest

Driven from Moshi or Arusha to Marangu Gate for registration, then 70 km on rough roads to the Rongai start point near Nale Moru village. The trek follows a gradual, winding trail across maize fields into rain forest, arriving at Rongai First Cave (2,620 m) by mid-afternoon.

Day2

First Cave to Kikelewa Camp

8,600 ft → 11,800 ft12 km6–8 hrsMoorland

We continue through rain forest, transitioning into low alpine moorland where vegetation gives way to shrubs and grasses. We stop for lunch at Rongai Second Cave (3,450 m) before turning east to Kikelewa Camp (3,600 m).

Day3

Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn

11,800 ft → 14,100 ft4 km3–4 hrsAlpine Zone

A short but steep climb to Mawenzi Tarn (4,300 m), sitting in the shadow of the magnificent Mawenzi peak. You arrive in time for lunch with the whole afternoon to explore and acclimatise.

Day4

Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut

14,100 ft → 15,400 ft9 km8–10 hrsHigh Alpine Desert

A long but gradual hike west through the Saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi to Kibo Hut (4,700 m). The route is dry and barren but provides spectacular views of Kibo. After dinner you go to bed early before a midnight wake-up for the summit.

Day5

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

15,400 ft → 19,341 ft5.5 km up / 15 km down11–15 hrsGlacial / Arctic

From midnight you ascend in the dark to Hans Meyer Cave (5,150 m), then zigzag up to Gilman's Point (5,681 m) on Kibo's crater rim, and on to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). After your triumph you descend back past Kibo Hut to Horombo Hut — one of the longest but most rewarding days of your life.

Day6

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

12,200 ft → 6,100 ft20 km6–8 hrsMoorland / Rain Forest

A long descent of nearly 20 km through moorland and rain forest. At Marangu Gate you sign out and receive your certificate — gold for those who reached Uhuru Peak, green for those who reached Gilman's Point.

7 & 8 day options add an extra acclimatisation day at Mawenzi Tarn (4,300 m) and, on the 8-day version, a night at Rongai Second Cave — significantly improving summit success.
