Umbwe Route — the steep, direct caves route

The Umbwe route is a short, steep and direct route — considered the most challenging way up Mount Kilimanjaro. Because of the quick ascent it does not provide ideal acclimatisation stages, so although traffic is very low, the chances of success are also lower. It should only be attempted by very strong hikers confident in their ability to acclimatise.

Umbwe is known for its caves: the first night you sleep at the Umbwe Cave Camp, with two more caves to visit en route the following day. Because of the high risks of sleeping at Arrow Glacier camp and summiting via the Western Breach, all our Umbwe hikes are re-routed to join the Machame route from night 2.

On special request we can assist with Umbwe hikes attempting the Western Breach / Arrow Glacier path and a Crater camp overnight; this can only be arranged through our higher-quality packages and a supplement applies.

Umbwe Route Itinerary

6 Day Umbwe Route Itinerary

Day1

Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp

5,300 ft → 9,350 ft10.3 km6 hrsMontane Forest

After breakfast you are driven via Machame Gate to the Umbwe Gate (1,641 m), passing coffee and banana plantations. The route follows a forestry track up the ridge between the Lonzo and Umbwe rivers, with huge trees and spectacular views of deep gorges. Overnight at Umbwe Cave Camp.

Day2

Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp

9,350 ft → 13,070 ft6.3 km6 hrsMoorland

The forest thins to rockier terrain and moss-covered trees along a narrow but spectacular ridge. As you gain altitude, Kilimanjaro rises majestically ahead, etched against the sky. The path flattens toward Barranco Valley, where the camp sits below the Breach and Great Barranco Wall.

Day3

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

13,070 ft → 13,250 ft6 km6 hrsMoorland / Semi Desert

You climb the imposing Great Barranco Wall — easier than it first appears — topping out below the Heim Glacier. The route then crosses ridges and valleys through the Karanga Valley, the last water stop on the route. Overnight at Karanga Camp.

Day4

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

13,250 ft → 15,360 ft3.4 km4 hrsAlpine Desert

A 640 m ascent up the ridge to Barafu Camp ('ice' in Swahili), a bleak, exposed camp on a stony ridge. Familiarise yourself with the terrain before dark, prepare your gear and rest — the summit attempt begins the same night.

Day5

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Hut

15,360 ft → 19,341 ft4.5 km up / 10.8 km down13–16 hrsScree / Ice Summit

Waking around 23:20, you ascend heavy scree to Stella Point (5,739 m) for a magnificent sunrise, then a 2-hour climb through snow to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). After your accomplishment you descend about 3 hours back to Barafu, then down through moorland and forest to Mweka Hut (3,090 m).

Day6

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

10,140 ft → 5,380 ft8.5 km4–6 hrsRain Forest

After a well-deserved breakfast it is a short, scenic hike to the Park gate, where successful climbers receive their certificates — gold for Uhuru Peak, green for Stella Point. A vehicle then drives you back to Moshi for a hot shower, dinner and celebrations.

The 7 day Umbwe itinerary is the same as the 6 day, with an extra acclimatisation day at Barranco Camp to improve safety and summit success.
