Visa & Travel Documents

What you need to enter Tanzania — visa, passport and supporting documents.

Getting your visa

You can get your visa on arrival at the border or at Kilimanjaro and Dar es Salaam airports — allow extra time for the process. You will need US $100 cash if you are a US citizen, or US $50 cash for most other nationalities. Many travellers now apply online in advance through the official Tanzania e-visa system.

Alternatively, apply ahead of time through your nearest Tanzanian embassy or high commission. Each traveller typically needs to submit:

  • A completed visa application form
  • A valid passport (at least six months before expiry)
  • Two passport-size photographs
  • The visa fee (US $50, or US $100 for US passports)
  • A prepaid return envelope addressed to yourself
  • Proof of travel plans (our reservation confirmation is sufficient)

Allow around 30 days for postal processing, and consider certified or courier mail in both directions to keep your passport safe.

Passport

You must hold a valid passport with no less than six months' validity remaining from your date of entry into Tanzania.
