How to Choose the Best Kilimanjaro Route

12 May 2026 7 min read Kilimanjaro Climbing Agency

One of the first — and most important — decisions you'll make is which route to climb. Kilimanjaro has seven established routes, and the one you choose affects your scenery, your comfort, the crowds you meet and, crucially, your chance of reaching Uhuru Peak.

The short version

  • Best for first-timers & scenery: Lemosho (7–8 days)
  • Best value classic: Machame (7 days)
  • Prefer huts to tents: Marangu (6 days)
  • Quiet & good in the rains: Rongai (6–7 days)
  • Experienced, fast and tough: Umbwe (6–7 days)

Why the number of days matters most

The single biggest factor in summit success is acclimatisation, and acclimatisation takes time. A 5-day climb gives your body far less chance to adjust to altitude than a 7- or 8-day climb. As a rule of thumb, add a day wherever your budget and schedule allow — it dramatically improves both your comfort and your odds of standing on the roof of Africa.

Scenery vs. solitude

Lemosho and Rongai start quietly and stay scenic for longer, while Machame is busier but spectacular. Marangu is the only route with hut accommodation, which some travellers love and others find less atmospheric than camping under the stars.

Our honest recommendation

For most travellers, we suggest the 8-day Lemosho or 7-day Machame. They balance scenery, acclimatisation and cost beautifully. Tell us your dates, fitness and budget and we'll match you to the perfect trail.
