On the Mountain
What to Eat on Kilimanjaro: Food & Nutrition on the Mountain
Eating well on Kilimanjaro is about more than comfort — staying fuelled and hydrated is one of the keys to acclimatising and reaching the summit. The food surprises most first-time climbers.
A typical day of eating
- Breakfast: porridge, eggs, toast, fruit, tea and coffee
- Lunch: a hot or packed lunch — soups, pasta, sandwiches, fruit
- Dinner: soup to start, then rice, pasta or potatoes with meat or vegetable stews
Hydration is everything
Aim for 3–4 litres of water a day — some people need 5 or 6. Water is collected from mountain streams, boiled and treated to make it safe. Staying hydrated significantly reduces altitude symptoms.
Snacks & appetite
Appetite often fades at altitude, so bring high-energy snacks you actually enjoy — nuts, chocolate, energy bars and dried fruit. Eating little and often keeps your energy up even when you don't feel hungry.
